Lisa Whalen's City Manager and City Engineer

Both told me the water in the pictures below, "was safe to drink."  "Bad color, a little too much iron and a little too much manganese, but safe to drink."

Now that we have representatives in place who are committed to finally solving this problem, along comes Lisa Whalen and Dave Kolb to derail the process once again while dividing the city.  No thanks!

You May Have Noticed a Pattern

When Dave Kolb, campaign manager for the Whalen, Thoele and Mortenson team puts out a flyer, it generally has no place to verify what he says is fact--largely because it isn't.  Conversely, the information put out by supporters of the Vanderlinde, Abens and Donahue ticket, is always independently verifiable:

This Guy Is a Career Law Enforcement Official

Wouldn't you think he would have greater respect for facts, details and accurate prose?  Not sure I'd want him taking an incident report on anything involving myself or my family.  Let's examine what's wrong with this picture:

Bullet point one: How did Mr. Vanderlinde "negotiate" with anyone for a reverse-osmosis system, when that type of system was never approved by the residents of Minnetrista?  Were they just practicing their negotiating skills?  A little hard to negotiate without approved funding, isn't it?  32 emails would be quite a "negotiation!"  Why aren't these 32 emails of "negotiation" on your web site?

Bullet point two: So an ardent Lisa Whalen supporter--with half the facts--who also blames Mr. Vanderlinde for a new development in his neighborhood; shows up five years after the fact in an election year to disrupt a city council meeting over what amounted to a parking ticket?  Can you say, "childish political stunt?"  This is what you call a "hot topic?"  It's not exactly like screwing an entire community out of their right to vote on a mega-million dollar police station now is it?  I don't even see Mr. Vanderlinde's name in your "memo?"

Bullet point three: Irresponsible?  What else was he supposed to do?  Week after week after week after week, the same mis-informed few, showed up to disrupt a busy council with their inaccurate rants and threats to sue.  The council was busy trying to solve the serious water issue left behind so you could have your new police station.  Telling them to sue or shut up, was an extremely prudent thing thing to do in my opinion.

Bullet point four: He didn't advocate any such thing.  The city believed they needed to purchase a piece of useless property from the school district for a new water treatment facility.  The school board, was attempting to extort an unreasonable amount of money from the city for a 1/2 acre of useless, scrub wetland.  The SRO became a piece of that negotiation.  The city no longer needs the parcel, so the entire point became moot, yet the lie banner still flies!  Was Mr. Vandelinde; and the rest of the council, supposed to just buckle and give the school district everything they wanted?  I don't think so; this council, seems to be more committed to being stewards of our tax dollars than the old regime i.e. Lisa Whalen was.

"Honest, Independent Leadership?"

In case you missed the beautiful, 11 x 6 color glossy in the mail, please review the likeness below and then put on your thinking caps:

"Independent?"  Have you noticed these colorful 11 x 6 glossies, seem to arrive in the mail every other day?  Have you noticed the 1/2 page, color ads in The Laker?  Have you noticed the massive signage throughout the community?  Massive!  When do the TV and radio spots start?  Do you seriously think these three are funding this huge media barrage "independently?"  With a little help from $10 and $20 contributions from their "local" supporters?  Think about where the money is coming from and WHY!

"Independent?"  Lisa Whalen is so independent, when she was on the city council, the chief of police was able to convince her to waste $millions$ of dollars to build him an enormous luxury police station, which size-wise, is capable of servicing Eden Prairie.  Since many citizens were already clamoring to have our water fixed even back then, Lisa knew the voters would never agree to the chief's shiny new toy, while we continued to drink turpentine from our taps, so she showed us all what "independent" truly means to her!  "Independent" of what the citizens wanted, and against one of the core values America was founded on, she bypassed the voters and delivered to her buddy, a facility that sits largely empty today.  Now in 2014, she has the unmitigated gall to run on a platform of attacking the current council and mayor for trying to fix the very complex water issue that was too big for her to address years ago while keeping the chief happy?

So Patricia Thoele, could you please elaborate on what facet of Minnetrista's infrastructure failed during a natural disaster?  I know my water fails every time I turn on my tap....thanks to Lisa Whalen's "independence!"

Whalen Waste

Why does a community the size of Minnetrista, need a police station like this over clean drinking water?  If nothing else, it looks like great storage and good place to hold a barn dance!

"No Truth To That"

At the 19:50 mark of the 10/20/14, Minnetrista City Council meeting, watch Minnetrista police chief, Paul Falls, refute the lie that has been perpetuated against our entire community by Lisa Whalen, Patricia Thoele and Pam Mortenson:

There is {NO} truth to this:

These same people, continue to lie to the DARE organization itself, while jeopardizing DARE's tax exempt status as a 501 c (3) entity:

First of all, thanks for getting back to me as it was reported to me the banner had been taken down!?  I'm now back on the track to have DARE removed from the banner.  Presently this week and next I'm working in Florida so doing things from a distance isn't always the easiest or most expeditious, but I'm working to get it done.  Sorry!  Your input and photos have been of great assistance to me, as they say, "a picture is worth a thousand words!"

We Absolutely Need a Mayor Capable of "Dealing With" Met Council

You saw in yesterday's post what happened when amateur hour went up against Met Council.  You also saw who cleaned that mess up for Minnetrista.  If you think suburban issues with Met Council are going away soon, think again.  Do you really want to trust the future of this community vs. what Met Council has in mind, to a person who doesn't even trust you to vote?  Read the story below, and tell me how you think Lisa Whalen and company, will deal with these complex issues steaming at our community:
·

Home / News / Business & Economy / Suburbs push back against Met Council

While Republican lawmakers have long complained about the alleged wastefulness of light rail projects, Rep. Peggy Scott, R-Andover, cited Portland, Oregon, as a cautionary example of what will happen to the Twin Cities. She said light rail in Portland has required expensive subsidies, leading to cuts in bus service, poor road maintenance and traffic congestion far worse than in the Twin Cities. Suburbs push back against Met Council

The Metropolitan Council is an undemocratic institution bent on imposing a misguided, utopian vision on the suburbs which will lead to more traffic jams, costlier housing and, possibly, the prospect of gang wars over prime drug-dealing turf along new light rail hubs.
Those were just a few of the more tart views expressed about the powerful regional planning agency Thursday as 13 suburban lawmakers, mayors and other elected officials vowed to push back against Thrive MSP 2040, the Met Council’s long-term vision for transit and housing development in the seven-county metro area.
“The plan aims to socially engineer our future through dictates to elected officials. And the surprising, curious and ridiculous net result is this: We are going to see housing prices across the metro increase and traffic and gridlock grow worse,” said Rep. Linda Runbeck, R-Circle Pines, during the press conference at the State Office Building.
In particular, Runbeck objected to the Met Council’s emphasis on increasing housing density in targeted areas along transit lines. Such efforts will restrict the land available for conventional single-family homes, she asserted, driving up the costs.
“The states and regions that have the least government involvement in land and housing markets have the most affordable housing,” said Runbeck, who cited Texas and Louisiana as examples. By contrast, she said, states with most intensive regulations, such as California and Hawaii, have the most unaffordable housing.
Although the Met Council has been a subject of periodic criticism from both ends of the political spectrum since its inception in 1967, Runbeck said the “top-down decision making” in Thrive 2040 plan constitutes “a whole new era of aggressiveness.”
Rep. Jerry Hertaus, R-Greenfield, characterized the housing component of the plan as an example of “massive overreach” that ignores market realities. He said Met Council policies over the last several decades have encouraged sprawl outside the Met Council’s jurisdiction, as developers looked for cheaper land in communities such as Otsego and Delano.
“All that did was create the need for more roads and schools and infrastructure,” said Hertaus.

Cars over transit

While Republican lawmakers have long complained about the alleged wastefulness of light rail projects, Rep. Peggy Scott, R-Andover, added some new twists to those traditional critiques, arguing that more access to cars — not mass transit — is the solution to the transportation woes of the poor.
“Studies show that people without a high school diploma are 80 percent more likely to have a job and earn more money if they have a car,” said Scott. “If the Met Council wants to move people out of the poverty by giving them [better] access to jobs, they should look to increase, not decrease, automobile ownership.”
Scott cited Portland, Oregon, as a cautionary example of what will happen to the Twin Cities if the Met Council doesn’t reconsider Thrive 2040. She said light rail in Portland has required expensive subsidies, leading to cuts in bus service, poor road maintenance and traffic congestion far worse than in the Twin Cities.
“In Portland, crime is significantly higher within a quarter-mile radius of light rail stations. In fact, rivaling gangs have warred over who would control the drug traffic along the light rail corridors,” said Scott.
In keeping with perennial complaints that the Met Council is not democratic because its 17 members are not elected, Sen. Dave Osmek, R-Mound, said he would introduce legislation next session to allow for more local say in the selection of council members.
Under Osmek’s proposal, a council member could be rejected if a majority of elected officials in the cities within an individual Met Council member’s district determine he or she isn’t the right fit.
“Why not give the city a say in who should be their representative?” said Osmek. “Who cannot be in control of giving local control to local authorities?”
While that argument may hold broad appeal, the prospects for such legislation are murky at best. In the main, that’s because sitting governors are generally reluctant to yield the considerable influence that comes with appointing the members of a body with annual budget of nearly $1  billion and its own taxing authority.
Previous efforts to reform the governance structure of the Met Council — or eliminate it outright — have been rebuffed by past governors.
Asked about former Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s veto of the last such initiative, Scott responded, “I don’t have to be in lockstep with every Republican governor.”

Mayors unhappy

Some of the harshest criticisms came not from lawmakers but from suburban mayors.
“[The Met Council] doesn’t provide any useful benefit to us,” said Grant Mayor Tom Carr. “Taxation without representation means as much now as it did 200 years ago.”
Carr called the Thrive 2040 plan “social engineering based on the utopian view of an appointed council.”
Jim Nash, the mayor of Waconia and current Republican candidate for House District 47A, said the Thrive 2040 plan is rooted in bad math — at least as far as his city is concerned.
He said the plan originally projected that the population of Waconia would grow by just 47 people by 2040. With more than 100 new housing starts in Waconia over the last several years, Nash said, he complained to a Met Council demographer because those projections could have implications for the funding of future road and sewer projects in the city.
“The demographer said, ‘We can pencil whip the numbers for you,’” said Nash. He said demographer subsequently revised the estimates for Waconia to reflect anticipated growth.
“We should be basing our decisions on actual facts,” said Nash. “I call on the governor to bring in some reality and reign in the Met Council.”
Senate Minority Leader David Hann, R-Eden Prairie, echoed that sentiment
“In our view, the Met Council is out of control and it needs to be reformed,” said Hann. “Or maybe we should just pencil whip them out of existence.”
A recently released report from the Center for the American Experiment, the conservative Minneapolis-based think tank, advanced many of the same criticisms voiced by officials on Thursday. Among other things, the report —titled “Met Council Power Grab” — characterized Thrive 2040 as an effort to “allocate poverty all across the metro area” and a plan “to redistribute wealth from the suburbs to the urban core.”
It was authored by Katherine Kersten, the Star Tribune columnist, and Kim Crockett, the center’s chief operating officer.

Council’s response

Susan Haigh, the Met Council chair, was not immediately available for comment. However Meredith Vadis, the council’s communication director, said the complaints about the Met Council are nothing new and typically resurface during campaign season.
“The issue of Council governance has been debated since the council was formed and this history has demonstrated that there are many approaches to this issue, each having upsides and downsides,” she said. “We believe numerous metrics that measure our work provide the best evidence that the council is and continues to be accountable to residents, rate- and taxpayers around the metro.”
Vadis also cited a 2011 report from the Office of the Legislative Auditor, which found that the Twin Cities region’s transit system performed well on most measures when compared with 11 other regional systems.
She said the Thrive 2040 was a product of “extensive community engagement over a period of nearly three years that included local officials at both the county and city level as well as many other partners.”

Red Oak Lies By Lisa Whalen & Cronies Debunked in Writing

I guess when you put something in writing which includes verifiable {FACTS}, all of the blathering, unsubstantiated, public tantrums unleashed at recent city council meetings, take on an entirely new meaning.

Update on Lisa Whalen's Unauthorized Use of DARE Signage

Never mind the {FACT} the SRO isn't going anywhere at Westonka regardless of who the mayor is, now DARE has ordered the Whalen clan to take down the sign.  Their response; to manipulate the DARE logo as though that makes it ok:

Veterans Against Lisa Whalen, [VALW]

Veterans Against Lisa Whalen, [VALW] say, there is no way she should be given the privilege of being allowed to once again serve Minnetrista! She was voted out of office, for circumventing one of the most basic rights we all put on a uniform to protect; voting! Now she hopes all is forgotten. She's a slap in the face to every man & woman who ever "saddled up" for this Great Nation and what it stands for!  If you don't know the story; and she's hoping you don't, it's right here in a nutshell:

http://wayzatalifestyle.blogspot.com/2009/03/minnetrista-ignores-community-anger.html

Here is a 2012 letter from a Minnetrista Veteran, calling for the rest of her ilk to be voted off the council [which Lisa was in 2010] for their callous act:

http://sunpatriot.com/2012/07/27/letter-writer-shows-support-for-minnetrista-council-members/

 {Voters may recall that Mark [Vanderlinde] had said he would NOT SUPPORT the proposed new Minnetrista Police Facility if voters were not given an opportunity to vote their approval. Christians and a group of citizens collected petitions of more than 1,000 signatures requesting the right to vote. Council members Lisa Whalen, Al Roers, George Zenanko, and Mayor Cheryl Fischer all voted to deny that right to vote and approve the bonds to build the facility. Mark Vanderlinde voted no.}

The second edge of this travesty is, today the City of Minnetrista is still stuck with a large debt, a half empty mausoleum for a police station and less than drinkable water for many residents!

If you still plan on voting for Lisa Whalen, that's fine; we do still live in a free society and most people get that.  However, imagine explaining your decision to this guy:

So Let Me Get This Straight?

We have the treasurer of the Westonka school board, publicly endorsing a candidate for mayor:

http://lakerpioneer.com/2014/10/10/supporting-whalen-for-mayor-mortenson-and-thoele-for-trista-council/

who had her henchmen disrupt the 2014 Westonka homecoming parade and football game with uninvited and false campaigning; and is now polluting the community with outright campaign lies:

knowing full well the current council and mayor decided the issue last April:

http://lakerpioneer.com/2014/04/25/minnetrista-council-approves-sro-agreement-after-public-pressure/.

Lisa Whalen also worked very closely with her then co-council member:

https://www.sec.gov/litigation/aljdec/1981/id19810417rht.pdf

to keep you the voters from voting on a her pet project, which cost Minnetrista $millions$ at a time when we should have been fixing our water and infrastructure issues:

http://wayzatalifestyle.blogspot.com/2009/03/minnetrista-ignores-community-anger.html

which led to her and George being voted out on their ears.  Now she wants to be mayor?  If successful, will she bring in George for financial advice or stick with Ralph?

Isn't It Just Amazing

Among many other things; how the chair always starts out threatening to, "shut it down" if the audience isn't civil, and then the school board always ends up shouting down the citizenry??

Is Westonka School District Reneging On Its Promise For An Outside Investigation?

Kevin Borg sat in front of the cameras and promised an outside investigation of all the things that went terribly wrong on Friday, February 22, 2013.  Now, the word on the street, is that he is using the district's own general counsel to conduct this investigation.  If true, this is yet another example of his appalling mismanagement of the truth and lack of leadership in running our school district.  Here is Kevin Borg's direct quote:

At the meeting, Borg said he would be talking with a third party on Feb. 26 carry out an investigation on the incident.

“Due to the concerns raised an outside investigation will be conducted and an investigation report will be provided to the board,” he [Kevin Borg] said. “How the incident was evaluated will be reviewed as well as the timeline involved in making the decision and the consequences assigned.”

Using what amount's to an entity's in house counsel is not an outside investigation!

"Westonka Resident Seeks Answers from Superintendent About 'Harlem Shake' Suspensions"

Dear Superintendent Borg,

I received the following email auto reply from your computer last Monday
indicating that you were out of the office until Monday, Feb. 25th.  This
prompts the following few questions for you:

1.  Were you out of the district office and unavailable last Friday
afternoon (Feb. 22) at the time the Harlem Shake incident took place?

2.  Were you available Friday afternoon and over the weekend via your cell
phone either by voice calls or text messaging?

3.  Were any attempts to contact you either successfully or unsuccessfully
made by district staff on Friday afternoon / evening (Feb. 22)?  If so, by
whom?

4.  Did you participate in the discipline decisions on Friday (Feb. 22) made
regarding the Harlem Shake?

5.  Was Assistant Superintendent Mark Femrite present on duty at the school
facilities last Friday afternoon?  If not, was he available by voice calls
or text message?  Were attempts to contact Mr. Femrite either successfully
or unsuccessfully made by district staff on Friday afternoon/evening Feb 22.
If so, by whom?  Did Mr. Femrite participate in disciplinary decisions?

6.  Repeat item #5 questions, for School Principal Keith Randklev.

7.  Repeat item #5 questions for Assistant Principal Marty Fischer.

8.  Does the school district have a policy on who exactly needs to present
at the school facilities on "Duty Days" and which officials can be gone?

9.  Please name everyone who participated in reviewing the Harlem Shake
incident and deciding upon disciplinary action last Friday afternoon (Feb.
22)?

10. If more school officials than just Dion Koltes decided on the
disciplinary action, why is he the only one being thrown under the bus and
put on administrative leave at this time?

11. You stated during last Monday's (Feb. 25th) School Board Meeting that "I
own this".  Is there a reason why only Dion Koltes is being placed under the
bus and you are not joining him there if you do in fact "own this"?

12. School Board Chair Dave Botts participated in a radio broadcasted phone
interview Tuesday afternoon (Feb 26) with John Williams of WCCO radio.  He
indicated that the Athletic Director was being investigated for additional
allegations.  Has Dave Botts been made aware that his further defamation of
Dion Koltes could result in a huge lawsuit similar to what took place back
in 2005 when a custodian won a suit for $1.28 million from the Westonka
district?  Since Dave was on the board at that time, he should be well aware
of this event.  I attached the pertinent documents for your convenience.
Dave's radio interview is particularly troubling to me, since judgments made
against the school district are paid for by a separate "Judgment Levy" that
is an additional tax paid by all district residents, without their
authorization or vote, above and beyond their existing school property
taxes.  I believe that it would wise for you and the school board to reign
in Chair Dave Botts and ask for his resignation as his careless actions are
putting the school district in further jeopardy on many levels.

13. At several meetings during my tenure on the school board, I brought up
the fact that the Minnetrista Police Blotter published regularly in the
Laker Newspaper had a sizable percentage of the police department's reported
incidents taking place at the Westonka High School.  I stated that if the
parents of students entrust their children's education to the district, that
the district should personally provide school discipline for misbehavior and
that students should not leave our school with a police records for lapses
in their immature judgment, as these records are permanent and affect the
ability of a student being accepted into post secondary institutions,
receiving a job offer, or who-knows-what down the road.  The school board
and you disagreed with me on this at the time.  After seeing the devastating
results of the Harlem Shake incident, I beg you to reconsider and scale back
the presence of police officers in our school buildings.

14. I hereby request a copy of the district's investigation report on the
incident, which I understand is being conducted by an outside source.  I
accept the fact that names of students will need to be redacted from this
report in order to conform with data privacy issues, but our community
deserves nothing less.

My two cents:

Dion Koltes, suspended NO ONE!  Kevin Borg, is paid a tremendous amount of money to prevent what happened last Friday from happening.  Where was he?  Did it really take him three days to figure out the magnitude of what was transpiring, or was he swimming with the dolphins with his phone turned off?  On Monday, Kevin said, "I own this, it happened on my watch."  Why not fix it last Friday while it was still fixable?  These types of things keep happening over and over and over on Kevin's watch, yet, Dion Koltes is on "administrative leave," while Kevin keeps getting huge raises.

Oh My

It would seem that Mr Borg and his cronies have once again been allowed to throw our tiny community into complete turmoil:

http://www.startribune.com/local/west/192930481.html

The video doesn't really look anymore unsafe or dangerous than say shooting rabbits in your backyard with a .22 rifle when you live in a residential development such as Halstead Bay.

Watching team borg's ham-handed buffoonery in dealing with situation, makes one shudder at the thought of this crew being given $40,000,000.

Tuesday, October 7, 2014

Congratulations To Supt Borg on His 9% per Annum Raise!!

I just wish he would have been within 9% of how much my property taxes would go up if his referendum passed last fall!  I guess this means the parents no longer have to supply the district with writing paper and those bake sales & door to doors are no longer necessary now that the district is flush with cash!!  How about 21st century lighting for the swimming pool?!?!

Well They Missed My Property Tax Increase By "Only" 50%

I sent the email below to the crew this AM, but have received no reply nor do I expect one.  Use their little gizmo to calculate how much they missed yours by!!  Scary to think they have their mitts on our $30,000,000.  Hope they come closer with those "estimates!"
_________________________________________________________________________
During your “Yes” campaign, the community was flooded with this propaganda:

Question 2 is a $23.3 million bond to fund deferred maintenance of district buildings.
  • It would address roofs, exteriors, mechanical/electrical systems, and parking lots.
  • The estimated tax impact on a $300,000 home would be $9/month.*
Question 3 is a $6.6 million bond to fund additional improvements to the learning environment, safety and accessibility.
  • It would improve bathrooms, locker rooms, playgrounds, kitchens, athletic field maintenance, and building security.
  • The estimated tax impact on a $300,000 home would be $4.50/month.*
* Try the online Tax Impact Calculator to see how the three referendum questions would impact your property taxes.

Just received my 2012 Hennepin County Tax Statement in the mail and the school portion of the property tax on my slightly more than $300,000 assessed value home went up $21.18 per month or 32.49% over 2011.

At $329,000, your calculator said $14.50 per month.  So you missed by 53%??  What would it have been had the market not moved and reduced the interest cost by $3 million?!  A 70% miss???!

For 2012, my assessed value decreased, but my property tax increased by 9.7% thanks largely to you!

Con people have used the “pennies per day” pitch for centuries vs. looking at hard percentages!

I certainly hope my tax statement is the exception, but I’m hearing the same from other mystified Westonka residents.  What should [we] tell them?????

In light of this new example of your inability to be accurate with numbers, facts and data, I believe you should move forward ASAP with finding an independent project accountant like the community desires:
